1:8
[niv] Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do,
[asv] Wherefore, though I have all boldness in Christ to enjoin thee that which is befitting,
[jnd] Wherefore having much boldness in Christ to enjoin thee what is fitting,

[ylt] Wherefore, having in Christ much boldness to command thee that which is fit --
[bbe] And so, though I might, in the name of Christ, give you orders to do what is right,
1:9
[niv] yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul--an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus--
[asv] yet for love's sake I rather beseech, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now a prisoner also of Christ Jesus:
[jnd] for love's sake I rather exhort, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also prisoner of Jesus Christ.
[kjv] Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
[nwb] Yet for love's sake I rather beseech , being such one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
[rsv] yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you--I, Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus--
[web] yet for love's sake I rather beg, being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now a prisoner also of Christ Jesus.
[ylt] because of the love I rather entreat, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ;
[bbe] Still, because of love, in place of an order, I make a request to you, I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner of Christ Jesus:
1:10
[niv] I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.
[asv] I beseech thee for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, Onesimus,
[jnd] I exhort thee for *my* child, whom I have begotten in bonds, Onesimus,
[kjv] I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
[nwb] I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
[rsv] I appeal to you for my child, Ones'imus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment.
[web] I beg you for my child, whom I have fathered in my bonds, Onesimus,
[ylt] I entreat thee concerning my child -- whom I did beget in my bonds -- Onesimus,
[bbe] My request is for my child Onesimus, the child of my chains,
1:11
[niv] Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
[asv] who once was unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable to thee and to me:
[jnd] once unserviceable to thee, but now serviceable to thee and to me:
[kjv] Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
[nwb] Who in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
[rsv] (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.)
[web] who once was useless to you, but now is useful to you and to me;
[ylt] who once was to thee unprofitable, and now is profitable to me and to thee,
[bbe] Who in the past was of no profit to you, but now is of profit to you and to me:
1:12
[niv] I am sending him--who is my very heart--back to you.
[asv] whom I have sent back to thee in his own person, that is, my very heart:
[jnd] whom I have sent back to thee: him, that is, *my* bowels:
[kjv] Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
[nwb] Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, my own bowels:
[rsv] I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart.
[web] I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart,
[ylt] whom I did send again, and thou him (that is, my own bowels) receive,
[bbe] Whom I have sent back to you, him who is my very heart:
1:13
[niv] I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.
[asv] whom I would fain have kept with me, that in thy behalf he might minister unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
[jnd] whom *I* was desirous of keeping with myself, that for thee he might minister to me in the bonds of the glad tidings;
[kjv] Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
[nwb] Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered to me in the bonds of the gospel:
[rsv] I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel;
[web] whom I wanted to keep with me, that in your behalf he might minister to me in the bonds of the gospel.
[ylt] whom I did wish to retain to myself, that in thy behalf he might minister to me in the bonds of the good news,
[bbe] Though my desire was to keep him with me, to be my servant in the chains of the good news, in your place:
1:14
[niv] But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced.
[asv] but without thy mind I would do nothing; that thy goodness should not be as of necessity, but of free will.
[jnd] but I have wished to do nothing without thy mind, that thy good might not be as of necessity but of willingness:
[kjv] But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
[nwb] But without thy mind I would do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
[rsv] but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own free will.
[web] But I was willing to do nothing without your consent, that your goodness would not be as of necessity, but of free will.
[ylt] and apart from thy mind I willed to do nothing, that as of necessity thy good deed may not be, but of willingness,
[bbe] But without your approval I would do nothing; so that your good works might not be forced, but done freely from your heart.
1:15
[niv] Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good--
[asv] For perhaps he was therefore parted from thee for a season, that thou shouldest have him for ever;
[jnd] for perhaps for this reason he has been separated for a time, that thou mightest possess him fully for ever;
[kjv] For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
[nwb] For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldst receive him for ever;
[rsv] Perhaps this is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back for ever,
[web] For perhaps he was therefore separated from you for a while, that you would have him forever,
[ylt] for perhaps because of this he did depart for an hour, that age-duringly thou mayest have him,
[bbe] For it is possible that for this reason he was parted from you for a time, so that you might have him for ever;
1:16
[niv] no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.
[asv] no longer as a servant, but more than a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much rather to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
[jnd] not any longer as a bondman, but above a bondman, a beloved brother, specially to me, and how much rather to thee, both in flesh and in Lord?
[kjv] Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
[nwb] Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more to thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
[rsv] no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
[web] no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, specially to me, but how much rather to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
[ylt] no more as a servant, but above a servant -- a brother beloved, especially to me, and how much more to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord!
[bbe] No longer as a servant, but more than a servant, a brother, very dear to me specially, but much more to you, in the flesh as well as in the Lord.
1:17
[niv] So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.
[asv] If then thou countest me a partner, receive him as myself.
[jnd] If therefore thou holdest me to be a partner , receive him as me;
[kjv] If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
[nwb] If thou accountest me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
[rsv] So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.
[web] If then you count me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
[ylt] If, then, with me thou hast fellowship, receive him as me,
[bbe] If then you take me to be your friend and brother, take him in as myself.
1:18
[niv] If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.
[asv] But if he hath wronged the at all, or oweth thee aught, put that to mine account;
[jnd] but if he have wronged thee anything or owe anything , put this to my account.
[kjv] If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
[nwb] If he hath wronged thee, or oweth aught, put that on my account;
[rsv] If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.
[web] But if he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, put that to my account.
[ylt] and if he did hurt to thee, or doth owe anything, this to me be reckoning;
[bbe] If he has done you any wrong or is in debt to you for anything, put it to my account.
1:19
[niv] I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back--not to mention that you owe me your very self.
[asv] I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not unto thee that thou owest to me even thine own self besides.
[jnd] *I* Paul have written with mine own hand; *I* will repay that I say not to thee that thou owest even thine own self also to me.
[kjv] I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
[nwb] I Paul have written with my own hand, I will repay although I do not say to thee that thou owest to me even thy own self besides.
[rsv] I, Paul, write this with my own hand, I will repay it--to say nothing of your owing me even your own self.
[web] I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe to me even your own self besides).
[ylt] I, Paul did write with my hand, I -- I will repay; that I may not say that also thyself, besides, to me thou dost owe.
[bbe] I, Paul, writing this myself, say, I will make payment to you: and I do not say to you that you are in debt to me even for your life.
1:20
