[niv] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
[asv] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;
[jnd] Blessed the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassions, and God of all encouragement;
[kjv] Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
[nwb] Blessed God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all consolation.
[rsv] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

[ylt] Blessed God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of the mercies, and God of all comfort,
[bbe] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort;
1:4
[niv] who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
[asv] who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
[jnd] who encourages us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to encourage those who are in any tribulation whatever, through the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged of God.
[kjv] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
[nwb] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them who are in any trouble by the consolation with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
[rsv] who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
[web] who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
[ylt] who is comforting us in all our tribulation, for our being able to comfort those in any tribulation through the comfort with which we are comforted ourselves by God;
[bbe] Who gives us comfort in all our troubles, so that we may be able to give comfort to others who are in trouble, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
1:5
[niv] For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
[asv] For as the sufferings of Christ abound unto us, even so our comfort also aboundeth through Christ.
[jnd] Because, even as the sufferings of the Christ abound towards us, so through the Christ does our encouragement also abound.
[kjv] For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
[nwb] For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
[rsv] For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
[web] For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ.
[ylt] because, as the sufferings of the Christ do abound to us, so through the Christ doth abound also our comfort;
[bbe] For as we undergo more of the pain which Christ underwent, so through Christ does our comfort become greater.
1:6
[niv] If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.
[asv] But whether we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which worketh in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:
[jnd] But whether we are in tribulation, for your encouragement and salvation, wrought in the endurance of the same sufferings which *we* also suffer,
[kjv] And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
[nwb] And whether we are afflicted, for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we are comforted, for your consolation and salvation.
[rsv] If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
[web] But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which works in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.
[ylt] and whether we be in tribulation, for your comfort and salvation, that is wrought in the enduring of the same sufferings that we also suffer; whether we are comforted, for your comfort and salvation;
[bbe] But if we are troubled, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which takes effect through your quiet undergoing of the same troubles which we undergo:
1:7
[niv] And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
[asv] and our hope for you is stedfast; knowing that, as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also are ye of the comfort.
[jnd] (and our hope for you sure;) or whether we are encouraged, for your encouragement and salvation: knowing that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also of the encouragement.
[kjv] And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
[nwb] And our hope of you steadfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also of the consolation.
[rsv] Our hope for you is unshaken; for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
[web] Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.
[ylt] and our hope stedfast for you, knowing that even as ye are partakers of the sufferings -- so also of the comfort.
[bbe] And our hope for you is certain; in the knowledge that as you take part in the troubles, so you will take part in the comfort.
1:8
[niv] We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.
[asv] For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
[jnd] For we do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, as to our tribulation which happened in Asia, that we were excessively pressed beyond power, so as to despair even of living.
[kjv] For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
[nwb] For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life:
[rsv] For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of the affliction we experienced in Asia; for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself.
[web] For we don't desire to have you uninformed, brothers, concerning our affliction which happened to us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, so much that we despaired even of life.
[ylt] For we do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of our tribulation that happened to us in Asia, that we were exceedingly burdened above power, so that we despaired even of life;
[bbe] For it is our desire that you may not be without knowledge of our trouble which came on us in Asia, that the weight of it was very great, more than our power, so that it seemed that we had no hope even of life:
1:9
[niv] Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
[asv] yea, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead:
[jnd] But we ourselves had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not have our trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead;
[kjv] But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
[nwb] But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead:
[rsv] Why, we felt that we had received the sentence of death; but that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead;
[web] Yes, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead,
[ylt] but we ourselves in ourselves the sentence of the death have had, that we may not be trusting on ourselves, but on God, who is raising the dead,
[bbe] Yes, we ourselves have had the answer of death in ourselves, so that our hope might not be in ourselves, but in God who is able to give life to the dead:
1:10
[niv] He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,
[asv] who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;
[jnd] who has delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver; in whom we confide that he will also yet deliver;
[kjv] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
[nwb] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver
[rsv] he delivered us from so deadly a peril, and he will deliver us; on him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.
[web] who delivered us out of so great a death, and does deliver; on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;
[ylt] who out of so great a death did deliver us, and doth deliver, in whom we have hoped that even yet He will deliver;
[bbe] Who gave us salvation from so great a death: on whom we have put our hope that he will still go on to give us salvation;
1:11
[niv] as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
[asv] ye also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed upon us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf.
[jnd] ye also labouring together by supplication for us that the gift towards us, through means of many persons, may be the subject of the thanksgiving of many for us.
[kjv] Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
[nwb] Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift upon us by the means of many persons, thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
[rsv] You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us in answer to many prayers.
[web] you also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed on us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on your behalf.
[ylt] ye working together also for us by your supplication, that the gift through many persons to us, through many may be thankfully acknowledged for us.
[bbe] You at the same time helping together by your prayer for us; so that for what has been given to us through a number of persons, praise may go up to God for us from all of them.
1:12
[niv] Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace.
[asv] For our glorifying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
[jnd] For our boasting is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and sincerity before God, (not in fleshly wisdom but in God's grace,) we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly towards you.
[kjv] For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
[nwb] For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our manner of life in the world, and more abundantly toward you.
[rsv] For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience that we have behaved in the world, and still more toward you, with holiness and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God.
[web] For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.
[ylt] For our glorying is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom, but in the grace of God, we did conduct ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you;
[bbe] For our glory is in this, in the knowledge which we have that our way of life in the world, and most of all in relation to you, has been holy and true in the eyes of God; not in the wisdom of the flesh, but in the grace of God.
1:13
[niv] For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that,
[asv] For we write no other things unto you, than what ye read or even acknowledge, and I hope ye will acknowledge unto the end:
[jnd] For we do not write other things to you but what ye well know and recognise; and I hope that ye will recognise to the end,
[kjv] For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;
[nwb] For we write no other things to you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye will acknowledge even to the end;
[rsv] For we write you nothing but what you can read and understand; I hope you will understand fully,
[web] For we write no other things to you, than what you read or even acknowledge, and I hope you will acknowledge to the end;
[ylt] for no other things do we write to you, but what ye either do read or also acknowledge, and I hope that also unto the end ye shall acknowledge,
[bbe] For in our letters we say no other things to you, but those which you are reading, and to which you give agreement, and, it is my hope, will go on doing so to the end:
1:14
[niv] as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.
[asv] as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that we are your glorying, even as ye also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.
[jnd] even as also ye have recognised us in part, that we are your boast, even as *ye* ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.
[kjv] As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.
[nwb] As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.
[rsv] as you have understood in part, that you can be proud of us as we can be of you, on the day of the Lord Jesus.
[web] as also you acknowledged us in part, that we are your boasting, even as you also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.
[ylt] according as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that your glory we are, even as also ye ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus;
[bbe] Even as you have been ready, in part, to say that we are your glory, in the same way that you are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.
1:15
[niv] Because I was confident of this, I planned to visit you first so that you might benefit twice.
[asv] And in this confidence I was minded to come first unto you, that ye might have a second benefit;
[jnd] And with this confidence I purposed to come to you previously, that ye might have a second favour;
[kjv] And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;
[nwb] And in this confidence I purposed to come to you before, that ye might have a second benefit;
[rsv] Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a double pleasure;
[web] In this confidence, I was determined to come first to you, that you might have a second benefit;
[ylt] and in this confidence I was purposing to come unto you before, that a second favour ye might have,
[bbe] And being certain of this, it was my purpose to come to you before, so that you might have a second grace;
1:16
[niv] I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea.
[asv] and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come unto you, and of you to be set forward on my journey unto Judaea.
[jnd] and to pass through to Macedonia by you, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and to be set forward by you to Judaea.
[kjv] And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.
[nwb] And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again from Macedonia to you, and by you to be brought on my way towards Judea.
[rsv] I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedo'nia, and to come back to you from Macedo'nia and have you send me on my way to Judea.
[web] and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and to be sent forward by you on my journey to Judea.
[ylt] and through you to pass to Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come unto you, and by you to be sent forward to Judea.
[bbe] And by way of Corinth to go into Macedonia, and from there to come back again to you, so that you might send me on my way to Judaea.
1:17
[niv] When I planned this, did I do it lightly? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say, "Yes, yes" and "No, no"?
[asv] When I therefore was thus minded, did I show fickleness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the yea yea and the nay nay?
[jnd] Having therefore this purpose, did I then use lightness? Or what I purpose, do I purpose according to flesh, that there should be with me yea yea, and nay nay?
[kjv] When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?
[nwb] When I therefore was thus minded, did I use levity? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea, yea, and nay, nay?
[rsv] Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans like a worldly man, ready to say Yes and No at once?
[web] When I therefore was thus determined, did I show fickleness? Or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the "Yes, yes" and the "No, no?"
[ylt] This, therefore, counselling, did I then use the lightness; or the things that I counsel, according to the flesh do I counsel, that it may be with me Yes, yes, and No, no?
[bbe] If then I had such a purpose, did I seem to be changing suddenly? or am I guided in my purposes by the flesh, saying, Yes, today, and, No, tomorrow?
1:18
[niv] But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No."
[asv] But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay.
[jnd] Now God faithful, that our word to you is not yea and nay.
[kjv] But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.
[nwb] But God true, our word towards you was not yea and nay.
[rsv] As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No.
[web] But as God is faithful, our word toward you was not "Yes and no."
[ylt] and God faithful, that our word unto you became not Yes and No,
[bbe] As God is true, our word to you is not Yes and No.
1:19
[niv] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and Silas and Timothy, was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes."
[asv] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him is yea.
[jnd] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, he who has been preached by us among you (by me and Silvanus and Timotheus), did not become yea and nay, but yea *is* in him.
[kjv] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
[nwb] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, and Silvanus, and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
[rsv] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we preached among you, Silva'nus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No; but in him it is always Yes.
[web] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not "Yes and no," but in him is "Yes."
[ylt] for the Son of God, Jesus Christ, among you through us having been preached -- through me and Silvanus and Timotheus -- did not become Yes and No, but in him it hath become Yes;
[bbe] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we were preaching among you, even I and Silvanus and Timothy, was not Yes and No, but in him is Yes.
1:20
[niv] For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.
[asv] For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us.
[jnd] For whatever promises of God , in him is the yea, and in him the amen, for glory to God by us.
[kjv] For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
[nwb] For all the promises of God in him yea, and in him Amen, to the glory of God by us.
[rsv] For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God.
[web] For however many are the promises of God, in him is the "Yes." Therefore also through him is the "Amen," to the glory of God through us.
[ylt] for as many as promises of God, in him the Yes, and in him the Amen, for glory to God through us;
[bbe] For he is the Yes to all the undertakings of God: and by him all the words of God are made certain and put into effect, to the glory of God through us.
1:21
[niv] Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,
[asv] Now he that establisheth us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;
[jnd] Now he that establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, God,
[kjv] Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
[nwb] Now he who establisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, God;
[rsv] But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us;
[web] Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;
[ylt] and He who is confirming you with us into Christ, and did anoint us, God,
[bbe] Now he who makes our faith strong together with you, in Christ, and has given us of his grace, is God;
1:22
[niv] set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
[asv] who also sealed us, and gave us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
[jnd] who also has sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
[kjv] Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
[nwb] Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the spirit in our hearts.
[rsv] he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
[web] who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.
[ylt] who also sealed us, and gave the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
[bbe] And it is he who has put his stamp on us, even the Spirit, as the sign in our hearts of the coming glory.
1:23
[niv] I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.
[asv] But I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I forbare to come unto Corinth.
[jnd] But I call God to witness upon my soul that to spare you I have not yet come to Corinth.
[kjv] Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
[nwb] Moreover, I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I have not as yet come to Corinth.
[rsv] But I call God to witness against me--it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth.
[web] But I call God for a witness to my soul, that I didn't come to Corinth to spare you.
[ylt] And I for a witness on God do call upon my soul, that sparing you, I came not yet to Corinth;
[bbe] But God is my witness that it was in pity for you that I did not come to Corinth at that time.
1:24

[niv] Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.
[asv] Not that we have lordship over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for in faith ye stand fast.
[jnd] Not that we rule over your faith, but are fellow-workmen of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
[kjv] Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
[nwb] Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
[rsv] Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.
[web] Not that we have lordship over your faith, but are fellow workers with you for your joy. For you stand firm in faith.
[ylt] not that we are lords over your faith, but we are workers together with your joy, for by the faith ye stand.
[bbe] Not that we have authority over your faith, but we are helpers of your joy: for it is faith which is your support..
