2:1
[niv] So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
[asv] But I determined this for myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.
[jnd] But I have judged this with myself, not to come back to you in grief.
[kjv] But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
[nwb] But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
[rsv] For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit.
[web] . But I determined this for myself, that I would not come to you again in sorrow.
[ylt] And I decided this to myself, not again to come in sorrow unto you,
[bbe] But it was my decision for myself, not to come again to you with sorrow.
2:2
[niv] For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?
[asv] For if I make you sorry, who then is he that maketh me glad but he that is made sorry by me?
[jnd] For if *I* grieve you, who also it that gladdens me, if not he that is grieved through me?
[kjv] For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
[nwb] For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same who is made sorry by me?
[rsv] For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained?
[web] For if I make you sorry, then who will make me glad but he who is made sorry by me?
[ylt] for if I make you sorry, then who is he who is making me glad, except he who is made sorry by me?
[bbe] For if I give you sorrow, who then will make me glad, but he who is made sad by me?
2:3
[niv] I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.
[asv] And I wrote this very thing, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
[jnd] And I have written this very [to you], that coming I may not have grief from those from whom I ought to have joy; trusting in you all that my joy is of you all.
[kjv] And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
[nwb] And I wrote this same to you, lest, coming I should have sorrow from them by whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is of you all.
[rsv] And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all.
[web] And I wrote this very thing to you, so that, when I came, I wouldn't have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is of you all.
[ylt] and I wrote to you this same thing, that having come, I may not have sorrow from them of whom it behoved me to have joy, having confidence in you all, that my joy is of you all,
[bbe] And I said this very thing in my letter, for fear that when I came I might have sorrow from those from whom it was right for me to have joy; being certain of this, that my joy is the joy of you all.
2:4
[niv] For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.
[asv] For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly unto you.
[jnd] For out of much tribulation and distress of heart I wrote to you, with many tears; not that ye may be grieved, but that ye may know the love which I have very abundantly towards you.
[kjv] For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
[nwb] For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly to you.
[rsv] For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
[web] For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love that I have so abundantly for you.
[ylt] for out of much tribulation and pressure of heart I wrote to you through many tears, not that ye might be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly toward you.
[bbe] For out of much trouble and pain of heart and much weeping I sent my letter to you; not to give you sorrow, but so that you might see how great is the love which I have to you.
2:5
[niv] If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.
[asv] But if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all.
[jnd] But if any one has grieved, he has grieved, not me, but in part (that I may not overcharge ) all of you.
[kjv] But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
[nwb] But if any hath caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
[rsv] But if any one has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure--not to put it too severely--to you all.
[web] But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I not press too heavily) to you all.
[ylt] And if any one hath caused sorrow, he hath not caused sorrow to me, but in part, that I may not burden you all;
[bbe] But if anyone has been a cause of sorrow, he has been so, not to me only, but in some measure to all of you (I say this that I may not be over-hard on you).
2:6
[niv] The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
[asv] Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many;
[jnd] Sufficient to such a one this rebuke which by the many;
[kjv] Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
[nwb] Sufficient to such a man this punishment, which by many.
[rsv] For such a one this punishment by the majority is enough;
[web] Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many;
[ylt] sufficient to such a one is this punishment, that by the more part,
[bbe] Let it be enough for such a man to have undergone the punishment which the church put on him;
2:7
[niv] Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
[asv] so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.
[jnd] so that on the contrary ye should rather shew grace and encourage, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with excessive grief.
[kjv] So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
[nwb] So that on the other hand, ye rather to forgive , and comfort , lest perhaps such one should be swallowed up with excessive sorrow.
[rsv] so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
[web] so that on the contrary you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excessive sorrow.
[ylt] so that, on the contrary, rather for you to forgive and to comfort, lest by over abundant sorrow such a one may be swallowed up;
[bbe] So that now, on the other hand, it is right for him to have forgiveness and comfort from you, for fear that his sorrow may be over-great.
2:8
[niv] I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
[asv] Wherefore I beseech you to confirm your love toward him.
[jnd] Wherefore I exhort you to assure him of love.
[kjv] Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
[nwb] Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm love towards him.
[rsv] So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.
[web] Therefore I beg you to confirm your love toward him.
[ylt] wherefore, I call upon you to confirm love to him,
[bbe] For which cause my desire is that you will make your love to him clear by your acts.
2:9
[niv] The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
[asv] For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.
[jnd] For to this end also I have written, that I might know, by putting you to the test, if as to everything ye are obedient.
[kjv] For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
[nwb] For to this end also I wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.
[rsv] For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything.
[web] For to this end I also wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether you are obedient in all things.
[ylt] for, for this also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether in regard to all things ye are obedient.
[bbe] And for the same reason I sent you a letter so that I might be certain of your desire to do my orders in all things.
2:10
[niv] If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
[asv] But to whom ye forgive anything, I forgive also: for what I also have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes have I forgiven it in the presence of Christ;
[jnd] But to whom ye forgive anything, *I* also; for I also, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes in person of Christ;
[kjv] To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
[nwb] To whom ye forgive any thing, I also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave , for your sakes , in the person of Christ;
[rsv] Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ,
[web] Now I also forgive whomever you forgive anything. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,
[ylt] And to whom ye forgive anything -- I also; for I also, if I have forgiven anything, to whom I have forgiven , because of you -- in the person of Christ --
[bbe] But if you give forgiveness to anyone, I do the same: for if I have given forgiveness for anything, I have done it because of you, in the person of Christ;
2:11
[niv] in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
[asv] that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
[jnd] that we might not have Satan get an advantage against us, for we are not ignorant of *his* thoughts.
[kjv] Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
[nwb] Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
[rsv] to keep Satan from gaining the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
[web] that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
[ylt] that we may not be over-reached by the Adversary, for of his devices we are not ignorant.
[bbe] So that Satan may not get the better of us: for we are not without knowledge of his designs.
2:12
[niv] Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,
[asv] Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and when a door was opened unto me in the Lord,
[jnd] Now when I came to Troas for the glad tidings of the Christ, a door also being opened to me in Lord,
[kjv] Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
[nwb] Furthermore, when I came to Troas to the gospel of Christ, and a door was opened to me by the Lord,
[rsv] When I came to Tro'as to preach the gospel of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord;
[web] Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and when a door was opened to me in the Lord,
[ylt] And having come to Troas for the good news of the Christ, and a door to me having been opened in the Lord,
[bbe] Now when I came to Troas for the good news of Christ, and there was an open door for me in the Lord,
2:13
[niv] I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.
[asv] I had no relief for my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went forth into Macedonia.
[jnd] I had no rest in my spirit at not finding Titus my brother; but bidding them adieu, I came away to Macedonia.
[kjv] I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
[nwb] I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
[rsv] but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedo'nia.
[web] I had no relief for my spirit, because I didn't find Titus, my brother, but taking my leave of them, I went forth into Macedonia.
[ylt] I have not had rest to my spirit, on my not finding Titus my brother, but having taken leave of them, I went forth to Macedonia;
[bbe] I had no rest in my spirit because Titus my brother was not there: so I went away from them, and came into Macedonia.
2:14
[niv] But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.
[asv] But thanks be unto God, who always leadeth us in triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest through us the savor of his knowledge in every place.
[jnd] But thanks to God, who always leads us in triumph in the Christ, and makes manifest the odour of his knowledge through us in every place.
[kjv] Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
[nwb] Now thanks to God, who always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place.
[rsv] But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumph, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.
[web] But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and reveals through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.
[ylt] and to God thanks, who at all times is leading us in triumph in the Christ, and the fragrance of His knowledge He is manifesting through us in every place,
[bbe] But praise be to God who makes us strong to overcome in Christ, and makes clear through us in every place the value of the knowledge of him.
2:15
[niv] For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
[asv] For we are a sweet savor of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and in them that perish;
[jnd] For we are a sweet odour of Christ to God, in the saved and in those that perish:
[kjv] For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
[nwb] For we are to God a sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
[rsv] For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,
[web] For we are a sweet aroma of Christ to God, in those who are saved, and in those who perish;
[ylt] because of Christ a sweet fragrance we are to God, in those being saved, and in those being lost;
[bbe] For we are a sweet perfume of Christ to God in those who are getting salvation and in those who are going to destruction;
2:16
[niv] To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?
[asv] to the one a savor from death unto death; to the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
[jnd] to the one an odour from death unto death, but to the others an odour from life unto life; and who sufficient for these things?
[kjv] To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
[nwb] To the one the savor of death to death; and to the other the savor of life to life. And who sufficient for these things?
[rsv] to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
[web] to the one a stench from death to death; to the other a sweet aroma from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
[ylt] to the one, indeed, a fragrance of death to death, and to the other, a fragrance of life to life; and for these things who is sufficient?
[bbe] To the one it is a perfume of death to death; to the other a perfume of life to life. And who is enough for such things?
2:17
[niv] Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.
[asv] For we are not as the many, corrupting the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, speak we in Christ.
[jnd] For we do not, as the many, make a trade of the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as of God, before God, we speak in Christ.
[kjv] For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
[nwb] For we are not as many, who corrupt the word of God: but as from sincerity, but as from God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
[rsv] For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word; but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
[web] For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ.
[ylt] for we are not as the many, adulterating the word of God, but as of sincerity -- but as of God; in the presence of God, in Christ we do speak.
[bbe] For we are not like the great number who make use of the word of God for profit: but our words are true, as from God, being said as before God in Christ..
