10:1
[niv] By the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you--I, Paul, who am "timid" when face to face with you, but "bold" when away!
[asv] Now I Paul myself entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you:
[jnd] But I myself, Paul, entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of the Christ, who, as to appearance, [am] mean among you, but absent am bold towards you;
[kjv] Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
[nwb] Now I Paul myself beseech you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence base among you, but being absent am bold towards you:
[rsv] I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ--I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold to you when I am away! --
[web] . Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you.
[ylt] And I, Paul, myself, do call upon you -- through the meekness and gentleness of the Christ -- who in presence, indeed humble among you, and being absent, have courage toward you,
[bbe] Now I, Paul, myself make request to you by the quiet and gentle behaviour of Christ, I who am poor in spirit when with you, but who say what is in my mind to you without fear when I am away from you:
10:2
[niv] I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.
[asv] yea, I beseech you, that I may not when present show courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
[jnd] but I beseech that present I may not be bold with the confidence with which I think to be daring towards some who think of us as walking according to flesh.
[kjv] But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
[nwb] But I beseech , that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, with which I think to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
[rsv] I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion.
[web] Yes, I beg you, that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
[ylt] and I beseech , that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;
[bbe] Yes, I make my request to you, so that when I am with you I may not have to make use of the authority which may be needed against some to whom we seem to be walking after the flesh.
10:3
[niv] For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
[asv] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh
[jnd] For walking in flesh, we do not war according to flesh.
[kjv] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
[nwb] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh:
[rsv] For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war,
[web] For though we walk in the flesh, we don't wage war according to the flesh;
[ylt] for walking in the flesh, not according to the flesh do we war,
[bbe] For though we may be living in the flesh, we are not fighting after the way of the flesh
10:4
[niv] The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
[asv] (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds),
[jnd] For the arms of our warfare not fleshly, but powerful according to God to overthrow of strongholds;
[kjv] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
[nwb] (For the weapons of our warfare not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
[rsv] for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
[web] for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,
[ylt] for the weapons of our warfare not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,
[bbe] (For the arms with which we are fighting are not those of the flesh, but are strong before God for the destruction of high places);
10:5
[niv] We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
[asv] casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;
[jnd] overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ;
[kjv] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
[nwb] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
[rsv] We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
[web] throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;
[ylt] reasonings bringing down, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,
[bbe] Putting an end to reasonings, and every high thing which is lifted up against the knowledge of God, and causing every thought to come under the authority of Christ;
10:6
[niv] And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
[asv] and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience shall be made full.
[jnd] and having in readiness to avenge all disobedience when your obedience shall have been fulfilled.
[kjv] And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
[nwb] And having in a readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
[rsv] being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
[web] and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience will be made full.
[ylt] and being in readiness to avenge every disobedience, whenever your obedience may be fulfilled.
[bbe] Being ready to give punishment to whatever is against his authority, after you have made it clear that you are completely under his control.
10:7
[niv] You are looking only on the surface of things. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as he.
[asv] Ye look at the things that are before your face. If any man trusteth in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ's, so also are we.
[jnd] Do ye look at what concerns appearance? If any one has confidence in himself that he is of Christ, let him think this again in himself, that even as he of Christ, so also we.
[kjv] Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
[nwb] Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trusteth to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he Christ's, even so we Christ's.
[rsv] Look at what is before your eyes. If any one is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that as he is Christ's, so are we.
[web] Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ's, so also we are Christ's.
[ylt] The things in presence do ye see? if any one hath trusted in himself to be Christ's, this let him reckon again from himself, that according as he is Christ's, so also we Christ's;
[bbe] Give attention to the things which are before you. If any man seems to himself to be Christ's, let him keep in mind that we are as much Christ's as he is.
10:8
[niv] For even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than pulling you down, I will not be ashamed of it.
[asv] For though I should glory somewhat abundantly concerning our authority (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down), I shall not be put to shame:
[jnd] For and if I should boast even somewhat more abundantly of our authority, which the Lord has given for building up and not for your overthrowing, I shall not be put to shame;
[kjv] For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
[nwb] For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
[rsv] For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame.
[web] For though I should boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down) I will not be put to shame,
[ylt] for even if also anything more abundantly I shall boast concerning our authority, that the Lord gave us for building up, and not for casting you down, I shall not be ashamed;
[bbe] For though I might take pride in our authority (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for your destruction), it will not be a cause of shame to me:
10:9
[niv] I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters.
[asv] that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by my letters.
[jnd] that I may not seem as if I was frightening you by letters:
[kjv] That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
[nwb] That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
[rsv] I would not seem to be frightening you with letters.
[web] that I may not seem as if I desire to terrify you by my letters.
[ylt] that I may not seem as if I would terrify you through the letters,
[bbe] That I may not seem to have the desire of causing you fear by my letters.
10:10
[niv] For some say, "His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing."
[asv] For, His letters, they say, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.
[jnd] because his letters, he says, weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught.
[kjv] For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
[nwb] For letters (say they) weighty and powerful; but bodily presence weak, and speech contemptible.
[rsv] For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account."
[web] For, "His letters," they say, "are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised.
[ylt] `because the letters indeed -- saith one -- weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'
[bbe] For his letters, they say, have weight and are strong; but in body he is feeble, and his way of talking has little force.
10:11
[niv] Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.
[asv] Let such a one reckon this, that, what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present.
[jnd] Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters absent, such also present in deed.
[kjv] Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
[nwb] Let such one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such also in deed when we are present.
[rsv] Let such people understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present.
[web] Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present.
[ylt] This one -- let him reckon thus: that such as we are in word, through letters, being absent, such also, being present, in deed.
[bbe] Let those who say this keep in mind that, what we are in word by letters when we are away, so will we be in act when we are present.
10:12
[niv] We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.
[asv] For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with certain of them that commend themselves: but they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.
[jnd] For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves; but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not intelligent.
[kjv] For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
[nwb] For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
[rsv] Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.
[web] For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.
[ylt] For we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,
[bbe] For we will not make comparison of ourselves with some of those who say good things about themselves: but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and making comparison of themselves with themselves, are not wise.
10:13
[niv] We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us, a field that reaches even to you.
[asv] But we will not glory beyond our measure, but according to the measure of the province which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even unto you.
[jnd] Now *we* will not boast out of measure, but according to the measure of the rule which the God of measure has apportioned to us, to reach to you also.
[kjv] But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
[nwb] But we will not boast of things without measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even to you.
[rsv] But we will not boast beyond limit, but will keep to the limits God has apportioned us, to reach even to you.
[web] But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but within the boundaries with which God appointed to us, which reach even to you.
[ylt] and we in regard to the unmeasured things will not boast ourselves, but after the measure of the line that the God of measure did appoint to us -- to reach even unto you;
[bbe] We will not give glory to ourselves in over-great measure, but after the measure of the rule which God has given us, a measure which comes even to you.
10:14
[niv] We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you with the gospel of Christ.
[asv] For we stretch not ourselves overmuch, as though we reached not unto you: for we came even as far as unto you in the gospel of Christ:
[jnd] For we do not, as not reaching to you, overstretch ourselves, (for we have come to you also in the glad tidings of the Christ;)
[kjv] For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
[nwb] For we stretch not ourselves beyond , as though we reached not to you; for we are come as far as to you also in the gospel of Christ:
[rsv] For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you; we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ.
[web] For we don't stretch ourselves too much, as though we didn't reach to you. For we came even as far as to you in the gospel of Christ,
[ylt] for not as not reaching to you do we stretch ourselves overmuch, for even unto you did we come in the good news of the Christ,
[bbe] For we have no need to make ourselves seem more than we are, as if our authority did not come as far as to you: for we came even as far as you with the good news of Christ:
10:15
[niv] Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others. Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our area of activity among you will greatly expand,
[asv] not glorying beyond our measure, that is, in other men's labors; but having hope that, as your faith groweth, we shall be magnified in you according to our province unto further abundance,
[jnd] not boasting out of measure in other people's labours, but having hope, your faith increasing, to be enlarged amongst you, according to our rule, yet more abundantly
[kjv] Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
[nwb] Not boasting of things without measure, , of other men's labors; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you, according to our rule abundantly,
[rsv] We do not boast beyond limit, in other men's labors; but our hope is that as your faith increases, our field among you may be greatly enlarged,
[web] not boasting beyond proper limits in other men's labors, but having hope that as your faith grows, we will be magnified in you according to our boundaries to abundance,
[ylt] not boasting of the things not measured, in other men's labours, and having hope -- your faith increasing -- in you to be enlarged, according to our line -- into abundance,
[bbe] Not taking credit to ourselves for what is not our business, that is, for the work of others; but having hope that, with the growth of your faith, we may get the credit for an increase which is the effect of our work,
10:16
[niv] so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast about work already done in another man's territory.
[asv] so as to preach the gospel even unto the parts beyond you, and not to glory in another's province in regard of things ready to our hand.
[jnd] to announce the glad tidings to that beyond you, not to be boasting in another's rule of things made ready to hand.
[kjv] To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
[nwb] To preach the gospel in the beyond you, not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
[rsv] so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's field.
[web] so as to preach the gospel even to the parts beyond you, not to boast in what someone else has already done.
[ylt] in the beyond you to proclaim good news, not in another's line in regard to the things made ready, to boast;
[bbe] So that we may be able to go on and take the good news to countries still farther away than you are, and not take credit for another man's work in making things ready to our hand.
10:17
[niv] But, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
[asv] But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
[jnd] But he that boasts, let him boast in the Lord.
[kjv] But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
[nwb] But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
[rsv] "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord."
[web] But "he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord."
[ylt] and he who is boasting -- in the Lord let him boast;
[bbe] But whoever has a desire for glory, let his glory be in the Lord.
10:18
[niv] For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
[asv] For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
[jnd] For not *he* that commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
[kjv] For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
[nwb] For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
[rsv] For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends.
[web] For it isn't he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
[ylt] for not he who is commending himself is approved, but he whom the Lord doth commend.
[bbe] For the Lord's approval of a man is not dependent on his opinion of himself, but on the Lord's opinion of him..
