12:1
[niv] I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.
[asv] I must needs glory, though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[jnd] Well, it is not of profit to me to boast, for I will come to visions and revelations of Lord.
[kjv] It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[nwb] It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[rsv] I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[web] . It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[ylt] To boast, really, is not profitable for me, for I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[bbe] As it is necessary for me to take glory to myself, though it is not a good thing, I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
12:2
[niv] I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know--God knows.
[asv] I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not; or whether out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up even to the third heaven.
[jnd] I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago, (whether in body I know not, or out of the body I know not, God knows;) such caught up to third heaven.
[kjv] I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
[nwb] I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such one caught up to the third heaven.
[rsv] I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows.
[web] I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I don't know, or whether out of the body, I don't know; God knows), such a one caught up into the third heaven.
[ylt] I have known a man in Christ, fourteen years ago -- whether in the body I have not known, whether out of the body I have not known, God hath known -- such an one being caught away unto the third heaven;
[bbe] I have knowledge of a man in Christ, fourteen years back (if he was in the body, or out of the body, I am not able to say, but God only), who was taken up to the third heaven.
12:3
[niv] And I know that this man--whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows--
[asv] And I know such a man (whether in the body, or apart from the body, I know not; God knoweth),
[jnd] And I know such a man, (whether in body or out of the body I know not, God knows;)
[kjv] And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
[nwb] And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
[rsv] And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows--
[web] I know such a man (whether in the body, or apart from the body, I don't know; God knows),
[ylt] and I have known such a man -- whether in the body, whether out of the body, I have not known, God hath known, --
[bbe] And I have knowledge of such a man (if he was in the body, or out of the body, I am not able to say, but God only),
12:4
[niv] was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell.
[asv] how that he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
[jnd] that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable things said which it is not allowed to man to utter.
[kjv] How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
[nwb] That he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
[rsv] and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.
[web] how he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
[ylt] that he was caught away to the paradise, and heard unutterable sayings, that it is not possible for man to speak.
[bbe] How he was taken up into Paradise, and words came to his ears which may not be said, and which man is not able to say.
12:5
[niv] I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.
[asv] On behalf of such a one will I glory: but on mine own behalf I will not glory, save in my weaknesses.
[jnd] Of such I will boast, but of myself I will not boast, unless in my weaknesses.
[kjv] Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
[nwb] Of such one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in my infirmities.
[rsv] On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses.
[web] On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.
[ylt] Of such an one I will boast, and of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities,
[bbe] On account of such a one I will have glory: for myself I will take no glory, but only in my feeble body.
12:6
[niv] Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say.
[asv] For if I should desire to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I shall speak the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should account of me above that which he seeth me to be, or heareth from me.
[jnd] For if I shall desire to boast, I shall not be a fool; for I will say truth; but I forbear, lest any one should think as to me above what he sees me , or whatever he may hear of me.
[kjv] For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
[nwb] For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me , or he heareth from me.
[rsv] Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.
[web] For if I would desire to boast, I will not be foolish; for I will speak the truth. But I forbear, so that no man may account of me above that which he sees in me, or hears from me.
[ylt] for if I may wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for truth I will say; but I forebear, lest any one in regard to me may think anything above what he doth see me, or doth hear anything of me;
[bbe] For if I had a desire to take credit to myself, it would not be foolish, for I would be saying what is true: but I will not, for fear that I might seem to any man more than he sees me to be, or has word from me that I am.
12:7
[niv] To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.
[asv] And by reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, that I should not be exalted overmuch.
[jnd] And that I might not be exalted by the exceeding greatness of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn for the flesh, a messenger of Satan that he might buffet me, that I might not be exalted.
[kjv] And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
[nwb] And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
[rsv] And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated.
[web] By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, that I should not be exalted excessively.
[ylt] and that by the exceeding greatness of the revelations I might not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of the Adversary, that he might buffet me, that I might not be exalted overmuch.
[bbe] And because the revelations were so very great, in order that I might not be overmuch lifted up, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, one sent from Satan to give me pain.
12:8
[niv] Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
[asv] Concerning this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
[jnd] For this I thrice besought the Lord that it might depart from me.
[kjv] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
[nwb] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
[rsv] Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me;
[web] Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.
[ylt] Concerning this thing thrice the Lord did I call upon, that it might depart from me,
[bbe] And about this thing I made request to the Lord three times that it might be taken away from me.
12:9
[niv] But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
[asv] And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
[jnd] And he said to me, My grace suffices thee; for power is perfected in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather boast in my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may dwell upon me.
[kjv] And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
[nwb] And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
[rsv] but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
[web] He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
[ylt] and He said to me, `Sufficient for thee is My grace, for My power in infirmity is perfected;' most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of the Christ may rest on me:
[bbe] And he said to me, My grace is enough for you, for my power is made complete in what is feeble. Most gladly, then, will I take pride in my feeble body, so that the power of Christ may be on me.
12:10
[niv] That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
[asv] Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
[jnd] Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in necessities, in persecutions, in straits, for Christ: for when I am weak, then I am powerful.
[kjv] Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
[nwb] Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
[rsv] For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
[web] Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.
[ylt] wherefore I am well pleased in infirmities, in damages, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses -- for Christ; for whenever I am infirm, then I am powerful;
[bbe] So I take pleasure in being feeble, in unkind words, in needs, in cruel attacks, in troubles, on account of Christ: for when I am feeble, then am I strong.
12:11
[niv] I have made a fool of myself, but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the "super-apostles," even though I am nothing.
[asv] I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.
[jnd] I have become a fool; *ye* have compelled me; for *I* ought to have been commended by you; for I have been nothing behind those who were in surpassing degree apostles, if also I am nothing.
[kjv] I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.
[nwb] I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended by you: for in nothing am I behind the very greatest apostles, though I am nothing.
[rsv] I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I was not at all inferior to these superlative apostles, even though I am nothing.
[web] I have become foolish. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I behind the very best apostles, though I am nothing.
[ylt] I have become a fool -- boasting; ye -- ye did compel me; for I ought by you to have been commended, for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles -- even if I am nothing.
[bbe] I have been forced by you to become foolish, though it was right for my praise to have come from you: for in no way was I less than the chief of the Apostles, though I am nothing.
12:12
[niv] The things that mark an apostle--signs, wonders and miracles--were done among you with great perseverance.
[asv] Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, by signs and wonders and mighty works.
[jnd] The signs indeed of the apostle were wrought among you in all endurance, signs, and wonders, and works of power.
[kjv] Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
[nwb] Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
[rsv] The signs of a true apostle were performed among you in all patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.
[web] Truly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, by signs and wonders and mighty works.
[ylt] The signs, indeed, of the apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds,
[bbe] Truly the signs of an Apostle were done among you in quiet strength, with wonders and acts of power.
12:13
[niv] How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong!
[asv] For what is there wherein ye were made inferior to the rest of the churches, except it be that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this wrong.
[jnd] For in what is it that ye have been inferior to the other assemblies, unless that I myself have not been in laziness a charge upon you? Forgive me this injury.
[kjv] For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.
[nwb] For what is that in which ye were inferior to other churches, except that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.
[rsv] For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!
[web] For what is there in which you were made inferior to the rest of the assemblies, unless it is that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong.
[ylt] for what is there in which ye were inferior to the rest of the assemblies, except that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this injustice!
[bbe] For what is there in which you were made less than the other churches, but in the one thing that I was not a trouble to you? Let me have forgiveness for this wrong.
12:14
[niv] Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
[asv] Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be a burden to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
[jnd] Behold, this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be in laziness a charge; for I do not seek yours, but you; for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
[kjv] Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not your's but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
[nwb] Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
[rsv] Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you; for children ought not to lay up for their parents, but parents for their children.
[web] Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I seek not your possessions, but you. For the children ought not to save up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
[ylt] Lo, a third time I am ready to come unto you, and I will not be a burden to you, for I seek not yours, but you, for the children ought not for the parents to lay up, but the parents for the children,
[bbe] This is now the third time that I am ready to come to you; and I will not be a trouble to you: my desire is for you, not for your property: for it is not the children's business to make store for their fathers, but the fathers for the children.
12:15
[niv] So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?
[asv] And I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?
[jnd] Now *I* shall most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your souls, if even in abundantly loving you I should be less loved.
[kjv] And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.
[nwb] And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.
[rsv] I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you the more, am I to be loved the less?
[web] I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?
[ylt] and I most gladly will spend and be entirely spent for your souls, even if, more abundantly loving you, less I am loved.
[bbe] And I will gladly give all I have for your souls. If I have the more love for you, am I to be loved the less?
12:16
[niv] Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you. Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery!
[asv] But be it so, I did not myself burden you; but, being crafty, I caught you with guile.
[jnd] But be it so. *I* did not burden you, but being crafty I took you by guile.
[kjv] But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.
[nwb] But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.
[rsv] But granting that I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by guile.
[web] But be it so, I did not myself burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deception.
[ylt] And be it , I -- I did not burden you, but being crafty, with guile I did take you;
[bbe] But let it be so, that I was not a trouble to you myself; but (someone may say) being false, I took you with deceit.
12:17
[niv] Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent you?
[asv] Did I take advantage of you by any one of them whom I have sent unto you?
[jnd] Did I make gain of you by any of those whom I have sent to you?
[kjv] Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you?
[nwb] Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent to you?
[rsv] Did I take advantage of you through any of those whom I sent to you?
[web] Did I take advantage of you by anyone of them whom I have sent to you?
[ylt] any one of those whom I have sent unto you -- by him did I take advantage of you?
[bbe] Did I make a profit out of you by any of those whom I sent to you?
12:18
[niv] I urged Titus to go to you and I sent our brother with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not act in the same spirit and follow the same course?
[asv] I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
[jnd] I begged Titus, and sent the brother with did Titus at all make gain of you? have we not walked in the same spirit? not in the same steps?
[kjv] I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
[nwb] I desired Titus, and with I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? not in the same steps?
[rsv] I urged Titus to go, and sent the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not act in the same spirit? Did we not take the same steps?
[web] I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? Didn't we walk in the same spirit? Didn't we walk in the same steps?
[ylt] I entreated Titus, and did send with the brother; did Titus take advantage of you? in the same spirit did we not walk? -- did we not in the same steps?
[bbe] I gave orders to Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus make any profit out of you? were we not guided by the same Spirit, in the same ways?
12:19
[niv] Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.
[asv] Ye think all this time that we are excusing ourselves unto you. In the sight of God speak we in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying.
[jnd] Ye have long been supposing that we excuse ourselves to you: we speak before God in Christ; and all things, beloved, for your building up.
[kjv] Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
[nwb] Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves to you? we speak before God in Christ: but all things, dearly beloved, for your edification.
[rsv] Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves before you? It is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and all for your upbuilding, beloved.
[web] Again, do you think that we are excusing ourselves to you? In the sight of God we speak in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying.
[ylt] Again, think ye that to you we are making defence? before God in Christ do we speak; and the all things, beloved, for your up-building,
[bbe] It may seem to you that all this time we have been attempting to put ourselves in the right; but we are saying these things before God in Christ. For all things, dear brothers, are for your profit.
12:20
[niv] For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.
[asv] For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not; lest by any means there should be strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults;
[jnd] For I fear lest perhaps coming I find you not such as I wish, and that *I* be found by you such as ye do not wish: lest strifes, jealousies, angers, contentions, evil speakings, whisperings, puffings up, disturbances;
[kjv] For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
[nwb] For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and I shall be found by you such as ye would not: lest debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
[rsv] For I fear that perhaps I may come and find you not what I wish, and that you may find me not what you wish; that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.
[web] For I am afraid that by any means, when I come, I might find you not the way I want to, and that I might be found by you as you don't desire; that by any means there would be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, riots;
[ylt] for I fear lest, having come, not such as I wish I may find you, and I -- I may be found by you such as ye do not wish, lest there be strifes, envyings, wraths, revelries, evil-speakings, whisperings, puffings up, insurrections,
[bbe] For I have a fear that, when I come, you may not be answering to my desire, and that I may not be answering to yours; that there may be fighting, hate, angry feeling, divisions, evil talk about others, secrets, thoughts of pride, outbursts against authority;
12:21
[niv] I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.
[asv] lest again when I come my God should humble me before you, and I should mourn for many of them that have sinned heretofore, and repented not of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they committed.
[jnd] lest my God should humble me as to you when I come again, and that I shall grieve over many of those who have sinned before, and have not repented as to the uncleanness and fornication and licentiousness which they have practised.
[kjv] And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.
[nwb] lest, when I come again, my God may humble me among you, and I shall bewail many who have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness, and lewdness, and lasciviousness, which they have committed.
[rsv] I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned before and have not repented of the impurity, immorality, and licentiousness which they have practiced.
[web] that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness and sexual immorality and lustfulness which they committed.
[ylt] lest again having come, my God may humble me in regard to you, and I may bewail many of those having sinned before, and not having reformed concerning the uncleanness, and whoredom, and lasciviousness, that they did practise.
[bbe] And that when I come again, my God may put me to shame among you, and I may have grief for those who have done wrong before and have had no regret for their unclean ways, and for the evil desires of the flesh to which they have given way.
