4:1
[niv] Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.
[asv] Therefore seeing we have this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we faint not:
[jnd] Therefore, having this ministry, as we have had mercy shewn us, we faint not.
[kjv] Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
[nwb] Therefore, seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
[rsv] Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.
[web] . Therefore seeing we have this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we don't faint.
[ylt] Because of this, having this ministration, according as we did receive kindness, we do not faint,
[bbe] For this reason, because we have been made servants of this new order, through the mercy given to us, we are strong:
4:2
[niv] Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[asv] but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[jnd] But we have rejected the hidden things of shame, not walking in deceit, nor falsifying the word of God, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every conscience of men before God.
[kjv] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[nwb] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty; not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but, by manifestation of the truth, commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[rsv] We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[web] But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
[ylt] but did renounce for ourselves the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor deceitfully using the word of God, but by the manifestation of the truth recommending ourselves unto every conscience of men, before God;
[bbe] And we have given up the secret things of shame, not walking in false ways, and not making use of the word of God with deceit; but by the revelation of what is true, as before God, we have the approval of every man's sense of right and wrong.
4:3
[niv] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
[asv] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in them that perish:
[jnd] But if also our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in those that are lost;
[kjv] But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[nwb] But if our gospel is hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[rsv] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing.
[web] Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in those who perish;
[ylt] and if also our good news is vailed, in those perishing it is vailed,
[bbe] But if our good news is veiled, it is veiled from those who are on the way to destruction:
4:4
[niv] The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
[asv] in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them.
[jnd] in whom the god of this world has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the radiancy of the glad tidings of the glory of the Christ, who is image of God, should not shine forth .
[kjv] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
[nwb] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them who believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.
[rsv] In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God.
[web] in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.
[ylt] in whom the god of this age did blind the minds of the unbelieving, that there doth not shine forth to them the enlightening of the good news of the glory of the Christ, who is the image of God;
[bbe] Because the god of this world has made blind the minds of those who have not faith, so that the light of the good news of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, might not be shining on them.
4:5
[niv] For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
[asv] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
[jnd] For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus Lord, and ourselves your bondmen for Jesus' sake.
[kjv] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
[nwb] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
[rsv] For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
[web] For we don't preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
[ylt] for not ourselves do we preach, but Christ Jesus -- Lord, and ourselves your servants because of Jesus;
[bbe] For our preaching is not about ourselves, but about Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants through Jesus.
4:6
[niv] For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
[asv] Seeing it is God, that said, Light shall shine out of darkness, who shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
[jnd] Because the God who spoke that out of darkness light should shine who has shone in our hearts for the shining forth of the knowledge of the glory of God in face of Christ.
[kjv] For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
[nwb] For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined into our hearts, to the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
[rsv] For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
[web] Seeing it is God who said, "Light will shine out of darkness," who shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
[ylt] because God who said, Out of darkness light to shine, who did shine in our hearts, for the enlightening of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
[bbe] Seeing that it is God who said, Let light be shining out of the dark, who has put in our hearts the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
4:7
[niv] But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
[asv] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves;
[jnd] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassingness of the power may be of God, and not from us:
[kjv] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
[nwb] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not from us.
[rsv] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us.
[web] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.
[ylt] And we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us;
[bbe] But we have this wealth in vessels of earth, so that it may be seen that the power comes not from us but from God;
4:8
[niv] We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
[asv] we are pressed on every side, yet not straitened; perplexed, yet not unto despair;
[jnd] every way afflicted, but not straitened; seeing no apparent issue, but our way not entirely shut up;
[kjv] We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
[nwb] troubled on every side, yet not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair;
[rsv] We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
[web] We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair;
[ylt] on every side being in tribulation, but not straitened; perplexed, but not in despair;
[bbe] Troubles are round us on every side, but we are not shut in; things are hard for us, but we see a way out of them;
4:9
[niv] persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
[asv] pursued, yet not forsaken; smitten down, yet not destroyed;
[jnd] persecuted, but not abandoned; cast down, but not destroyed;
[kjv] Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
[nwb] Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
[rsv] persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
[web] pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;
[ylt] persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
[bbe] We are cruelly attacked, but not without hope; we are made low, but we are not without help;
4:10
[niv] We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
[asv] always bearing about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our body.
[jnd] always bearing about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our body;
[kjv] Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
[nwb] Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be made manifest in our body.
[rsv] always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
[web] always carrying in the body the putting to death of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
[ylt] at all times the dying of the Lord Jesus bearing about in the body, that the life also of Jesus in our body may be manifested,
[bbe] In our bodies there is ever the mark of the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be seen in our bodies.
4:11
[niv] For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.
[asv] For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
[jnd] for we who live are always delivered unto death on account of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh;
[kjv] For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
[nwb] For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus may be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
[rsv] For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
[web] For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh.
[ylt] for always are we who are living delivered up to death because of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our dying flesh,
[bbe] For, while living, we are still being given up to death because of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be seen in our flesh, though it is under the power of death.
4:12
[niv] So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
[asv] So then death worketh in us, but life in you.
[jnd] so that death works in us, but life in you.
[kjv] So then death worketh in us, but life in you.
[nwb] So then death worketh in us, but life in you.
[rsv] So death is at work in us, but life in you.
[web] So then death works in us, but life in you.
[ylt] so that, the death indeed in us doth work, and the life in you.
[bbe] So then, death is working in us, but life in you.
4:13
[niv] It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak,
[asv] But having the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, I believed, and therefore did I speak; we also believe, and therefore also we speak;
[jnd] And having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I have believed, therefore have I spoken; *we* also believe, therefore also we speak;
[kjv] We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
[nwb] We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
[rsv] Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak,
[web] But having the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, "I believed, and therefore I spoke." We also believe, and therefore also we speak;
[ylt] And having the same spirit of the faith, according to that which hath been written, `I believed, therefore I did speak;' we also do believe, therefore also do we speak;
[bbe] But having the same spirit of faith, as it is said in the Writings, The words of my mouth came from the faith in my heart; in the same way, our words are the outcome of our faith;
4:14
[niv] because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.
[asv] knowing that he that raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also with Jesus, and shall present us with you.
[jnd] knowing that he who has raised the Lord Jesus shall raise us also with Jesus, and shall present with you.
[kjv] Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.
[nwb] Knowing, that he who raised the Lord Jesus, will raise us also by Jesus, and will present with you.
[rsv] knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
[web] knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will present us with you.
[ylt] knowing that He who did raise up the Lord Jesus, us also through Jesus shall raise up, and shall present with you,
[bbe] Because we are certain that he who made the Lord Jesus come back from the dead, will do the same for us, and will give us a place in his glory with you.
4:15
[niv] All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
[asv] For all things are for your sakes, that the grace, being multiplied through the many, may cause the thanksgiving to abound unto the glory of God.
[jnd] For all things for your sakes, that the grace abounding through the many may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
[kjv] For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.
[nwb] For all things for your sakes, that the abundant grace may, through the thanksgiving of many, redound to the glory of God.
[rsv] For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
[web] For all things are for your sakes, that the grace, being multiplied through the many, may cause the thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
[ylt] for the all things because of you, that the grace having been multiplied, because of the thanksgiving of the more, may abound to the glory of God;
[bbe] For we go through all things on account of you, because the greater the number to whom the grace is given, the greater is the praise to the glory of God.
4:16
[niv] Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
[asv] Wherefore we faint not; but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.
[jnd] Wherefore we faint not; but if indeed our outward man is consumed, yet the inward is renewed day by day.
[kjv] For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
[nwb] For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man is wasted, yet the inward is renewed day by day.
[rsv] So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed every day.
[web] Therefore we don't faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.
[ylt] wherefore, we faint not, but if also our outward man doth decay, yet the inward is renewed day by day;
[bbe] For which cause we do not give way to weariness; but though our outer man is getting feebler, our inner man is made new day by day.
4:17
[niv] For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
[asv] For our light affliction, which is for the moment, worketh for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory;
[jnd] For our momentary light affliction works for us in surpassing measure an eternal weight of glory;
[kjv] For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
[nwb] For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh out for us a far more exceeding eternal weight of glory;
[rsv] For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
[web] For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory;
[ylt] for the momentary light matter of our tribulation, more and more exceedingly an age-during weight of glory doth work out for us --
[bbe] For our present trouble, which is only for a short time, is working out for us a much greater weight of glory;
4:18
[niv] So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
[asv] while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
[jnd] while we look not at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen; for the things that are seen for a time, but those that are not seen eternal.
[kjv] While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
[nwb] While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen temporal; but the things which are not seen eternal.
[rsv] because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
[web] while we don't look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
[ylt] we not looking to the things seen, but to the things not seen; for the things seen temporary, but the things not seen age-during.
[bbe] While our minds are not on the things which are seen, but on the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are for a time; but the things which are not seen are eternal..
