7:1
[niv] Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
[asv] Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
[jnd] Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us purify ourselves from every pollution of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in God's fear.
[kjv] Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
[nwb] Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
[rsv] Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.
[web] . Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
[ylt] Having, then, these promises, beloved, may we cleanse ourselves from every pollution of flesh and spirit, perfecting sanctification in the fear of God;
[bbe] Because God, then, will give us such rewards, dear brothers, let us make ourselves clean from all evil of flesh and spirit, and become completely holy in the fear of God.
7:2
[niv] Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.
[asv] Open your hearts to us: we wronged no man, we corrupted no man, we took advantage of no man.
[jnd] Receive us: we have injured no one, we have ruined no one, we have made gain of no one.
[kjv] Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.
[nwb] Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.
[rsv] Open your hearts to us; we have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one.
[web] Open your hearts to us. We wronged no one. We corrupted no one. We took advantage of no one.
[ylt] receive us; no one did we wrong; no one did we waste; no one did we defraud;
[bbe] Let your hearts be open to us: we have done no man wrong, no man has been damaged by us, we have made no profit out of any man,
7:3
[niv] I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.
[asv] I say it not to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die together and live together.
[jnd] I do not speak for condemnation, for I have already said that ye are in our hearts, to die together, and live together.
[kjv] I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
[nwb] I speak not to condemn for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with .
[rsv] I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together.
[web] I say this not to condemn you, for I have said before, that you are in our hearts to die together and live together.
[ylt] not to condemn you do I say , for I have said before that in our hearts ye are to die with and to live with;
[bbe] It is not with the purpose of judging you that I say this: for I have said before that you are in our hearts for life and death together.
7:4
[niv] I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
[asv] Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying on your behalf: I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our affliction.
[jnd] Great my boldness towards you, great my exulting in respect of you; I am filled with encouragement; I overabound in joy under all our affliction.
[kjv] Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
[nwb] Great my boldness of speech towards you, great my glorying concerning you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
[rsv] I have great confidence in you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. With all our affliction, I am overjoyed.
[web] Great is my boldness of speech toward you. Great is my boasting on your behalf. I am filled with comfort. I overflow with joy in all our affliction.
[ylt] great my freedom of speech unto you, great my glory on your behalf; I have been filled with the comfort, I overabound with the joy on all our tribulation,
[bbe] My words to you are without fear, I am full of pride on account of you: I have great comfort and joy in all our troubles.
7:5
[niv] For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn--conflicts on the outside, fears within.
[asv] For even when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, but we were afflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
[jnd] For indeed, when we came into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but afflicted in every way; without combats, within fears.
[kjv] For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
[nwb] For, when we had come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without fightings, within fears.
[rsv] For even when we came into Macedo'nia, our bodies had no rest but we were afflicted at every turn--fighting without and fear within.
[web] For even when we had come into Macedonia, our flesh had no relief, but we were afflicted on every side. Fightings were outside. Fear was inside.
[ylt] for also we, having come to Macedonia, no relaxation hath our flesh had, but on every side we are in tribulation, without fightings, within -- fears;
[bbe] For even when we had come into Macedonia our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; there were fightings outside and fears inside.
7:6
[niv] But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,
[asv] Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
[jnd] But he who encourages those that are low, God, encouraged us by the coming of Titus;
[kjv] Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
[nwb] Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
[rsv] But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,
[web] Nevertheless, he who comforts the lowly, God, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
[ylt] but He who is comforting the cast-down -- God -- He did comfort us in the presence of Titus;
[bbe] But God who gives comfort to the poor in spirit gave us comfort by the coming of Titus;
7:7
[niv] and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
[asv] and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more.
[jnd] and not by his coming only, but also through the encouragement with which he was encouraged as to you; relating to us your ardent desire, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I the more rejoiced.
[kjv] And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
[nwb] And not by his coming only, but by the consolation with which he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind towards me; so that I rejoiced the more.
[rsv] and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more.
[web] and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, and your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced still more.
[ylt] and not only in his presence, but also in the comfort with which he was comforted over you, declaring to us your longing desire, your lamentation, your zeal for me, so that the more I did rejoice,
[bbe] And not by his coming only, but by the comfort which he had in you, while he gave us word of your desire, your sorrow, your care for me; so that I was still more glad.
7:8
[niv] Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it--I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while--
[asv] For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it: though I did regret it (for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season),
[jnd] For if also I grieved you in the letter, I do not regret , if even I have regretted it; for I see that that letter, if even only for a time, grieved you.
[kjv] For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
[nwb] For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though but for a season.
[rsv] For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it (though I did regret it), for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.
[web] For though I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I see that my letter made you sorry, though just for a while.
[ylt] because even if I made you sorry in the letter, I do not repent -- if even I did repent -- for I perceive that the letter, even if for an hour, did make you sorry.
[bbe] For though my letter gave you pain, I have no regret for it now, though I had before; for I see that the letter gave you pain, but only for a time.
7:9
[niv] yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.
[asv] I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing.
[jnd] Now I rejoice, not that ye have been grieved, but that ye have been grieved to repentance; for ye have been grieved according to God, that in nothing ye might be injured by us.
[kjv] Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
[nwb] Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
[rsv] As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting; for you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
[web] I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a Godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing.
[ylt] I now do rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry to reformation, for ye were made sorry toward God, that in nothing ye might receive damage from us;
[bbe] Now I am glad, not that you had sorrow, but that your sorrow was the cause of a change of heart; for yours was a holy sorrow so that you might undergo no loss by us in anything.
7:10
[niv] Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
[asv] For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
[jnd] For grief according to God works repentance to salvation, never to be regretted; but the grief of the world works death.
[kjv] For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
[nwb] For godly sorrow worketh penitence to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
[rsv] For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death.
[web] For Godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death.
[ylt] for the sorrow toward God reformation to salvation not to be repented of doth work, and the sorrow of the world doth work death,
[bbe] For the sorrow which God gives is the cause of salvation through a change of heart, in which there is no reason for grief: but the sorrow of the world is a cause of death.
7:11
[niv] See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
[asv] For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.
[jnd] For, behold, this same thing, your being grieved according to God, how much diligence it wrought in *you*, but excusing , but indignation, but fear, but ardent desire, but zeal, but vengeance: in every way ye have proved yourselves to be pure in the matter.
[kjv] For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
[nwb] For behold this very thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, clearing of yourselves, yea, indignation, yea, fear, yea, vehement desire, yea, zeal, yea, avenging! In all ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
[rsv] For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves guiltless in the matter.
[web] For behold, this same thing, that you were made sorry in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vengeance! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter.
[ylt] for, lo, this same thing -- your being made sorry toward God -- how much diligence it doth work in you! but defence, but displeasure, but fear, but longing desire, but zeal, but revenge; in every thing ye did approve yourselves to be pure in the matter.
[bbe] For you see what care was produced in you by this very sorrow of yours before God, what clearing of yourselves, what wrath against sin, what fear, what desire, what serious purpose, what punishment. In everything you have made it clear that you are free from sin in this business.
7:12
[niv] So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.
[asv] So although I wrote unto you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be made manifest unto you in the sight of God.
[jnd] So then, if also I wrote to you, not for the sake of him that injured, nor for the sake of him that was injured, but for the sake of our diligent zeal for you being manifested to you before God.
[kjv] Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.
[nwb] Wherefore, though I wrote to you, not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.
[rsv] So although I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong, nor on account of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your zeal for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God.
[web] So although I wrote to you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be revealed in you in the sight of God.
[ylt] If, then, I also wrote to you -- not for his cause who did wrong, nor for his cause who did suffer wrong, but for our diligence in your behalf being manifested unto you before God --
[bbe] So though I sent you a letter, it was not only because of the man who did the wrong, or because of him to whom the wrong was done, but so that your true care for us might be made clear in the eyes of God.
7:13
[niv] By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.
[asv] Therefore we have been comforted: And in our comfort we joyed the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit hath been refreshed by you all.
[jnd] For this reason we have been encouraged. And we the rather rejoiced in our encouragement more abundantly by reason of the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
[kjv] Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
[nwb] Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: and exceedingly the more we rejoiced for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
[rsv] Therefore we are comforted. And besides our own comfort we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his mind has been set at rest by you all.
[web] Therefore we have been comforted. In our comfort we rejoiced the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
[ylt] because of this we have been comforted in your comfort, and more abundantly the more did we rejoice in the joy of Titus, that his spirit hath been refreshed from you all;
[bbe] So we have been comforted: and we had the greater joy in our comfort because of the joy of Titus, for his spirit had been made glad by you all.
7:14
[niv] I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well.
[asv] For if in anything I have gloried to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame; but as we spake all things to you in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth.
[jnd] Because if I boasted to him anything about you, I have not been put to shame; but as we have spoken to you all things in truth, so also our boasting to Titus has been truth;
[kjv] For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.
[nwb] For if I have boasted any thing to him concerning you, I am not ashamed; but as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which before Titus, is found a truth.
[rsv] For if I have expressed to him some pride in you, I was not put to shame; but just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting before Titus has proved true.
[web] For if in anything I have boasted to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth.
[ylt] because if anything to him in your behalf I have boasted, I was not put to shame; but as all things in truth we did speak to you, so also our boasting before Titus became truth,
[bbe] For I was not put to shame in anything in which I may have made clear to him my pride in you; but as we said nothing to you but what was true, so the good things which I said to Titus about you were seen by him to be true.
7:15
[niv] And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling.
[asv] And his affection is more abundantly toward you, while he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
[jnd] and his affections are more abundantly towards you, calling to mind the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
[kjv] And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
[nwb] And his tender affection is more abundant towards you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
[rsv] And his heart goes out all the more to you, as he remembers the obedience of you all, and the fear and trembling with which you received him.
[web] His affection is more abundantly toward you, while he remembers all of your obedience, how with fear and trembling you received him.
[ylt] and his tender affection is more abundantly toward you, remembering the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye did receive him;
[bbe] And his love to you is the more increased by his memory of you all, how you gave way to his authority, and how you took him to your hearts with fear and honour.
7:16
[niv] I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.
[asv] I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.
[jnd] I rejoice that in everything I am confident as to you.
[kjv] I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.
[nwb] I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all .
[rsv] I rejoice, because I have perfect confidence in you.
[web] I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.
[ylt] I rejoice, therefore, that in everything I have courage in you.
[bbe] It gives me great joy to see you answering to my good opinion of you in every way..
