[niv] And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.

[niv] Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
[asv] how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

[niv] For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,

[niv] they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
[asv] beseeching us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the ministering to the saints:

[kjv] Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

[niv] And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.

[niv] So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part.
[asv] Insomuch that we exhorted Titus, that as he made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace also.

[niv] But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us --see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
[asv] But as ye abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all earnestness, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

[niv] And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.
[asv] And herein I give my judgment: for this is expedient for you, who were the first to make a beginning a year ago, not only to do, but also to will.
[jnd] And I give opinion in this, for this is profitable for you who began before, not only to do, but also to be willing, a year ago.

[niv] Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.
[asv] But now complete the doing also; that as there was the readiness to will, so there may be the completion also out of your ability.
[jnd] But now also complete the doing of it; so that as the readiness to be willing, so also to complete out of what ye have.
[kjv] Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

[niv] For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
[asv] For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according as a man hath, not according as he hath not.
[jnd] For if the readiness be there, accepted according to what he may have, not according to what he has not.
[kjv] For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

[niv] Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality.

[niv] At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality,
[asv] but by equality: your abundance being a supply at this present time for their want, that their abundance also may become a supply for your want; that there may be equality:
[jnd] but of equality; in the present time your abundance for their lack, that their abundance may be for your lack, so that there should be equality.

[niv] For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.
[asv] For he accepted indeed our exhortation; but being himself very earnest, he went forth unto you of his own accord.
[jnd] For he received indeed the entreaty, but, being full of zeal, he went of his own accord to you;
[kjv] For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

[niv] What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.
[asv] and not only so, but who was also appointed by the churches to travel with us in the matter of this grace, which is ministered by us to the glory of the Lord, and to show our readiness:
[jnd] and not only , but also chosen by the assemblies as our fellow-traveller with this grace, ministered by us to the glory of the Lord himself, and our readiness;
[kjv] And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
[nwb] And not only, but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and your ready mind:
[rsv] and not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this gracious work which we are carrying on, for the glory of the Lord and to show our good will.
[web] Not only so, but who was also appointed by the assemblies to travel with us in this grace, which is served by us to the glory of the Lord himself, and to show our readiness.
[ylt] and not only so, but who was also appointed by vote by the assemblies, our fellow-traveller, with this favour that is ministered by us, unto the glory of the same Lord, and your willing mind;
[bbe] And not only so, but he was marked out by the churches to go with us in the grace of this giving which we have undertaken to the glory of the Lord and to make clear that our mind was ready:

[niv] We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift.
[asv] Avoiding this, that any man should blame us in the matter of this bounty which is ministered by us:

[niv] For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.

[niv] In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you.
[asv] and we have sent with them our brother, whom we have many times proved earnest in many things, but now much more earnest, by reason of the great confidence which he hath in you.
[jnd] And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved to be of diligent zeal in many things, and now more diligently zealous through the great confidence as to you.
[kjv] And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.

[niv] As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ.
[asv] Whether any inquire about Titus, he is my partner and my fellow-worker to you-ward, or our brethren, they are the messengers of the churches, they are the glory of Christ.
[jnd] Whether as regards Titus, my companion and fellow-labourer in your behalf; or our brethren, deputed messengers of assemblies, Christ's glory.
[kjv] Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

[niv] Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.
