[niv] They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

[niv] The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid."
[asv] The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.

[kjv] The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

[rsv] The Pharisees then said to him, "You are bearing witness to yourself; your testimony is not true."
[web] . The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your witness is not valid."
[ylt] The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'
[bbe] So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true.

[niv] Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
[asv] Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.

[bbe] So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come?
